This change is a result of the difference in behavior between Africanized bees and the European honey bees managed by beekeepers. African bees, also called "killer" bees, are very protective of their nests and easily provoked. Even though they do not deserve the "killer" title, they do deserve a heap of respect and a wide berth to avoid any nasty surprises.

Despite the fact that a nearby bee colony is now calm, it simply is not true that no threat exists. Research claims that an ordinary queen bee lives between 6 months and one year. Every time a new queen is born to replace the old queen, she leaves the nest briefly to mate with drones from neighboring colonies.

Africanized bees have been established for several years in the Southwestern states. Stats reveal that 1/2 of African bee attacks happen in circumstances where the victim was conscious of the bee colony but did nothing about it. If those nests were eliminated when they were discovered, the attack wouldn't have occurred.

Where Africanized bees have become established, there can be 100-200 colonies per square mile. Removing one crazy bee nest doesn't significantly lessen the general population of bees.
